About

Me and my wife, apple, in a corn maze. You can just see the top of our son, Olive’s, head.

I live in the Stadium District with my wife Apple and our son Olive. We now have a multi generational fruit naming theme going. I chose to live in the PNW because it’s my favorite place in the world. Apple had the good fortune to grow up here.

mahi studying some chicks

We have two Siamese cats - Mahi and Ahi. Then we’ve got five chickens, selected more for their ridiculous appearance than their ability to produce eggs. We love gardening. Kale grows year round in our garden, supplemented by tomatoes, herbs and chili peppers. It feeds both neighbors and deer. Our passion for mushroom foraging and cross country skiing is one of the many reasons public spaces are such a focus not just for me, but for my entire family.

I love coffee shops and walk to Curran Coffee most mornings. I bring a trash bag on that walk. You may have seen me along Schuster picking up garbage on my walk there.

HerE’s a load of GARBAGE I pICKed up along Schuster for adopt-a-road. I’ve done this a bunch, happily most days is just a walk with a single bag

We moved to Stadium from the Point Defiance area in 2022. I loved our old neighborhood — it was safe and friendly. Our neighbors in Stadium are great too. But during a six month period in Stadium we were robbed 4 times! Contrast, in our old neighborhood, I once left the garage door open all day by accident and no one took anything. I’d like to see a lot more focus on neighborhood safety and crime reduction in District 2.

Elected ExperiencE

None

Other Professional Experience.

27 year global career in software, data science and financial services - TIBCO, Software AG, DataStax, Couchbase, Oracle, Neo4j

I’ve had the opportunity to work all over the world - Chicago, New York, Johannesburg, London, Dallas and San Jose. My professional experience has taught me how to manage multi million dollar business units, growing them with satisfied customers. As I’ve learned more about our local government, I’ve been shocked by the outright waste, inefficiency and lack of accountability. We can do a lot better.

Education

University of Colorado, Boulder - BA Mathematics, BS Computer Science.  Colorado School of Mines - MS Statistical Learning Theory

I earned two undergrad degrees, one in math and another in computer science. For my honors work, I focused on machine learning and cognitive science. I studied how information propagates through different kinds of neural networks. I followed a friend to Colorado School of Mines where I earned a masters degree studying under him. That focused on statistical learning theory, a subfield of machine learning and AI. This education gives me a good foundation in using math and statistics to reason about our world.

Community Service

Bayside Trails, Adopt-A-Road (Schuster Parkway), Metro Parks CHIP-in!, WTA

I’ve spent thousands of hours working to improve our parks and reopen trails closed by our government. Some of this has been community organizing and pushing politicians. Much has been manual labor.

I organized the Bayside Trails group. I’m part of Adopt-A-Road, using complimentary dump passes and my truck to haul away loads of garbage dumped on Schuster. I pushed Parks Tacoma to organize CHIP-in! and WTA work parties on the Garfield Gulch section of the Bayside Trail.

I want to do a lot more to improve our public spaces, making sure they are open to the public and clean. However, I’ve hit the limits of what is possible as a volunteer, butting up against elected officials and bureaucrats who are against change. A large part of why I’m running for office is to expand that work.
